Fixed Network Water Metering Modernizes Prague’s Utilities

IoT-enabled smart meters bring digital intelligence to the Czech capital’s water infrastructure.

🌍 Project Overview

As part of its ongoing modernization strategy, a utility in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, has deployed 50,000 ultrasonic smart water meters across residential zones and public buildings. The initiative aims to reduce non-revenue water, improve operational efficiency, and provide real-time consumption visibility for end users.

The project forms part of a broader digital transformation across the country’s utility landscape, with growing interest in IoT-based metering technologies such as LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, and Wireless M-Bus.

🛠️ Technical Scope

The smart metering solution includes:

  • Ultrasonic water meters with integrated IoT communication modules

  • Fixed network architecture, based on LoRaWAN and NB-IoT protocols

  • Battery life of 8+ years, ensuring long-term sustainability

  • IP68 protection class, ideal for humid or underground installations

  • Tamper and leak detection, supporting proactive maintenance

These meters are installed with minimal disruption and immediately integrated into a central monitoring platform that collects and analyzes consumption data.

💡 Challenges Addressed

  • Manual meter reading inefficiencies and data delays

  • Lack of real-time visibility into consumption and potential leaks

  • Increasing demand for digital billing and remote diagnostics

  • Sustainability goals aligned with EU environmental directives

🌟 Benefits Delivered

Remote data collection with hourly and daily granularity
Operational savings through fewer site visits and streamlined maintenance
Improved customer experience via transparent consumption tracking
Higher accuracy, reducing billing disputes and enhancing trust
Scalable architecture, prepared for future smart city integration

“Digital water metering has enabled us to make smarter decisions, reduce losses, and serve customers better.”
— Technical Director, Prague Utility

🔎 Looking Ahead

With promising results from the first 50,000 installations, the utility is planning an expanded rollout, with tens of thousands of meters expected over the coming years. The successful deployment in Prague also serves as a national reference for other Czech cities aiming to digitalize their water services.
